It’s funny how people shit on that first handful of Astronauts being just there to look good and be “oh, we put a man into space” and how many of the first capsules were just glorified computers that ran themselves. But these guys were test pilots and brilliant as well. It’s like the book title says “The right stuff.” Those first four or five batches of Astronauts up into Apollo were all literally guys that could land a fucking washing machine if you got it to fly both my piloting skill and knowing physics.
Absolutely NO computer ran itself in the 60s, what the fuck are those people drinking? Pond water?
Let’s not forget the time even the boys at Mission Control didn’t realize during the Apollo 13 mission to just use basic fucking Newtonian mathematics to guide the CSM back to Earth but the dude commanding the mission (Jim Lovell) did it along with his crew using only a sextant and a wrist watch.

And he did. At the time of Apollo 13, Commander Lovell had spent more time in Space (And had of course already been to the Moon during Apollo 8′s test flight. Originally going to be a CSM and LEM flight, but downgraded to a CSM only.) than any other astronaut. He literally was the man for the job and who is the only man who could’ve commanded that mission and gotten it back home. He was literally Captain Fucking Kirk and Captain Picard rolled into one.
